HON’BLE MRS. JUSTICE ANUBHA RAWAT CHOUDHARY

High Court of Jharkhand, Ranchi

Her Ladyship was born on 25th Day of June, 1970. After schooling from Guru Nanak School, Ranchi, Her Ladyship pursued Bachelor of Science (Physics Honours Course) from Miranda House, Delhi University. She pursued LL.B. degree (1992-95) from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University.

During her practice as an Advocate from 29th Day of November, 1995, she appeared in leading cases in Civil side and from 1997 onwards, she focused on taxation matters of which a number of cases have been reported in various Law Journals. Considering her experience in the field of taxation, the State of Jharkhand, by way of special engagement, nominated her to represent the State in W.P.(T) No. 408 of 2013 and analogous cases challenging the provisions of the Jharkhand Entertainment Tax Act, 2012. She also represented Union of India in various tax matters after being appointed on 03rd Day of March, 2015 as Central Government Counsel for appearing in Jharkhand High Court. She was in the panel of NBCC India Limited, a Government of India Enterprise and appeared for the company in tax matters. She was empanelled on 14th March, 2002 as an Advocate to represent Jharkhand High Court in various cases. She was also a panel lawyer of Oriental Bank of Commerce, Bank of Baroda, Central Bank of India, Union Bank and Allahabad Bank for a long time.

Her Ladyship was nominated as a Lady Member of the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority. She participated in a project of Access to Justice by Poor and Disadvantaged People. She was also appointed as Amicus in many PIL(s) on bonded labour and condition of toilets in the educational institution / college / hostel. She was also appointed as a member of the Independent Committee to inquire into the complaint made by a student of National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi in 2015. Her Ladyship is one of the founder members of the Jharkhand High Court Middle Income Group Legal Aid Society.

Her Ladyship has been elevated as a Judge of Jharkhand High Court on 06th January, 2018.

Her Ladyship has decided a number of writ matters (service as well as land dispute), First Appeals, Second Appeals, Probate case, Company petitions, Arbitration matters including appointment of arbitrator(s), criminal matters including those related to Prevention of Corruption Act, etc. and while sitting in Division Bench, Her Ladyship has decided taxation as well as Commercial Appellate Division Cases, matters arising out from Central Administrative Tribunal etc.. The judgments and orders of Her Ladyship have been reported in various law Journals.

Her Ladyship has attended the National Conference on Commercial Disputes (March, 2018) and various National Judicial Conference for High Court Justices on the Regime of Goods and Service Tax at National Judicial Academy, Bhopal. Her Ladyship has also attended the National Conference on commercial disputes through virtual mode during the COVID-19 period. She delivered a lecture in a webinar on the topic “Grounds for Setting aside Domestic Arbitral Award – from 1940 till date” organised by the Jharkhand Legal Literacy Forum on 09.08.2020. She was a speaker on the topic “The Rule of Law and Access to Justice in the Age of Uncertainty” on 17.06.2020. She has also attened the online course on “Comparataive Competition Law” held from 4th June, 2021 to 13th August, 2021.

Her Ladyship is a member of the Juvenile Justice Board constituted by the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India. Her Ladyship has done far reaching works in this field by visiting ‘Observation Homes’, Children Home, etc. even during the COVID -19 period. Her Ladyship is also a member of the committee of the High Court for implementation of the provisions of The (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act 1994 and the Pre-conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Rules, 1996.
